In 1964, when Troop 49 was established, the original parent committee wanted to find a logo that would represent, with dynamic symbolism, the Troop's new number, which had been assigned by the Council. The obvious connection between the Troop's number was to the original San Francisco 49ers, the gold rushers. But the parents wanted something significant. Perhaps from afar someone who is not a 49er might not understand the connection, but a member of the Troop, past or present, knows.
The connection is that just like those original 49ers mined for gold in the rivers of the surrounding countryside of California, the boys of Troop 49 mine for gold with each opportunity, event and challenge that they face. During their time within the troop they are presented with various challenges, and sometimes upon initial glance, the boys might think they can not accomplish these challenges. However, they keep picking at the challenge, just like the 49ers did when they were mining for gold. Back then, those 49ers kept picking, with their ax, at the riverbed until they would find a nugget of gold. And like them, upon completion of each task, the scout realizes, perhaps subtly, that he has found a nugget of gold within himself. Over time, the time that he is in the troop, the scout begins to clearly understand two important things. First, he realizes that the gold that he found was within himself all along, just like it was in that riverbed in California, and second, he knows that it was the Troop, along with its traditions, and the opportunities and challenges that it provided him, that enabled him to find the gold. Because of this realization process the young boy who entered 49 transforms into a man of character. And he is forever a 49er!
Though the times have changed from 1964 to the present, one can still see the pride, ethics and traditions of the original Troop and it's intended direction. It is the Boys that keep it this way, not any outside force. They themselves see the true value of the Troop and they themselves are the true gold in the river of time that runs through the Troop 49.
